Hold on to your hats

By Frances Horodelski, Anchor
Today’s news will center on the CRTC looking into paper invoice fees, end of month rebalancing (bonds have been the big outperformer on the month and year), low volumes (because of the North American long weekend), QE chatter (what will Mario Draghi do next week), Icelandic volcanic activity, and reaction to the slightly stronger Canadian economic activity (watch the Canadian dollar which has been supported by the inversion trade and possible buying by the bankers helping 3G fund its acquisition of Tim Hortons). BNN will also have stories on Bombardier, Bonterra and balancing bonds.

The inversion situation

By Frances Horodelski, Anchor
Lots of items on BNN to highlight including an interview with the CEO of BTI Systems, discussion on housing affordability in Canada (which apparently improved in the most recent quarter) and always an eye on Ukraine-Russia where fighting continues in various spots. Markets are tense and down but we are approaching the long weekend. Traders don’t like to be too open with three days of no trading ahead of them.

Warren Buffett, who knows a juicy return when he sees one, is providing financing in the form of a $3 billion in return for preferred shares. The terms of the preferred shares are not available but when Berkshire participated in Heinz the coupon was 9%.

How Canadian are you?

By Frances Horodelski, Anchor
There is a lot to focus on this morning but as usual, I’m late. Don’t be too bullish when everyone else is – but don’t be a contrarian just for the sake of being so. Watch the news, focus on the numbers, and remain balanced. And read up on the recent report from the St. Louis Fed that highlights buy & hold has outperformed return chasers by 200 basis points in the period 2000-2012. Return chasers are those who buy into asset classes at their highs.

Dumb, dumber, dumbest

By Frances Horodelski, Anchor
Earnings season has begun for the Canadian banks. Royal Bank reported results of $1.64 per share versus an estimate of $1.56. The dividend was boosted by 4 cents to 75 cents per quarter (as expected by the consensus). According to Canaccord’s bank analyst, the beat reflected better trading revenues, advisory revenues and a one-time actuarial gain. The street often doesn’t “pay-up” for trading beats but we’ll see. Of note also is the return on common equity which was reported at 19.6% down from 21.3%.
