What do you call the opposite of a correction?

By Frances Horodelski, Anchor
Earnings remain a focus including Yahoo! (better than expected – although the key will be the tax-efficient way to realize the Alibaba assets), CNR (a record low operating ratio, the lowest of any Class 1 railroad plus a 24% increase in earnings per share. Scotia notes a “nice big divvy coming in January”, as much as a 24% increase). By Frances Horodelski, Anchor
In the news, Toyota recalling 1.75 million cars, Shire crashing as AbbVie is looking to reconsider its offer at an October 20th board meeting, Bank of America reported its results when adjusted for this, that and the other thing (legal items mostly), the earnings came in at 42 cents versus last year’s 20 cents.

Ask questions but don’t take glib answers

By Frances Horodelski, Anchor
What is on most investors’ minds today is the question: Is this the beginning of a bear market? Over the weekend I read a lot, including those that suggest a crash is imminent to those that said it remains a-buy-the-dips market. The technical picture, which is only a guide and not necessarily as useful for timing as some suggest, point to a market that is oversold in many ways (including only 16% of the NYSE Composite trading above their respective 50-day moving averages)
