Pick your poison

By Frances Horodelski, Anchor
We’re setting up for a big trading day. Big gold will be in focus and we have the executives covered with CEOs from Agnico Eagle, Goldcorp, Yamana, New Gold and for good measure a base metals focus with HudBay Minerals’ CEO. Continuing with the CEO-palooza, top executives from OpenText, Cipher Pharmaceuticals, Riocan and Vermilion Energy join us throughout the day as well. Finally, the CEO of IPXShuster will also be on to discuss the big week in IPOs.

What’s a MAU worth?

By Frances Horodelski, Anchor
The markets are taking a signal from Twitter and are floating higher (with the exception of the FTSE 100 and CAC 40 which are both lower). Earnings, airlines and the search for cheap stocks

By Frances Horodelski, Anchor
Investors aren’t losing much today. Flash PMIs around the world are coming in above expectations and above 50 allowing the bulls to continue their charge. Chinese data in particular (52 in July vs 50.7 in June and above the 51 estimate) is further satisfying a view that the cyclical upswing will continue. Meanwhile, earnings, earnings, earnings. PMI for the U.S. is out at 9:45 this morning.

All about earnings

By Frances Horodelski, Anchor
The big story today will remain earnings. Big tech from last night is showing mixed performance with Microsoft up 1.4% in the pre-market and Apple down a little. In Canadian corporate news today, the big story will be BCE (the parent company of Bell Media of which BNN is a division) buying in the rest of Bell Aliant that they don’t already own for a total consideration of $3.95 billion or $31 per share in a combination of stock and cash.
