What’s a MAU worth?

The markets are taking a signal from Twitter and are floating higher (with the exception of the FTSE 100 and CAC 40 which are both lower). Futures in Toronto and New York are suggesting a higher opening. Even Russian stocks are higher (although still down about 9% from June levels) despite more aggressive sanctions from the EU, Canada and the United States.

Lots of market-moving info ahead

Pick up your contrarian hat

As RBC’s analyst puts it “there’s gotta be a bang for all these bucks” following the release of a larger than expected loss in the company’s Q2. The earnings calendar lightens a little today, although it resumes with a vengeance next week, especially in Canada.

No shortage of facts

There will be no shortage of facts this week on the state of corporate America. 147 of the S&P 500 (including 12 Dow components) will report Q2 results. In total, the S&P 500 is expected to show earnings growth of 5% in the quarter, with a lot of variation around that average with an almost 12% gain for technology companies and a 0.7% decline for utilities.

The real news is inflation

Bank of Canada to err on the side of caution

The Bank of Canada is scheduled to issue a policy statement this morning at 10:00am ET. The main focus is going to be the central bank's assessment of inflationary pressures, because the consumer price index did tick upward in the most recent reading.
