Lots of earnings to drive activity

Busy morning. We have lots of Canadian earnings that will drive activity including Royal Bank with a beat and a two-cent dividend hike, National Bank reports a two-cent beat, Encana with a miss and a cut in 2015 capital expenditures, Magna reported better than expected earnings, split the stock two-for-one and raised the dividend to 44 cents per quarter from 38 cents.

Banks: both Big and Central

Barclays says it appears Royal’s earnings were much stronger that BMO’s. It anticipates a relief rally in RY shares this morning given the 1.6% drop yesterday. From Big to Central. We’ll get a rate decision and statement from the Bank of Canada at 10 a.m. ET. No one expects the Bank to move off its 1% overnight rate, so the focus will be on the statement.

ECB cuts trio of rates

The big news today is the ECB cutting a trio of rates (main refinancing operations down to 0.05% from 0.15%, lending facility to 0.3% from 0.1% and deposit facility to 0.2% from 0.1%). 8:30 a.m. EST will be the time for more details from Mario Draghi including discussion or detail on asset back security (ABS) purchases.

The inversion situation

Lots of items on BNN to highlight including an interview with the CEO of BTI Systems, discussion on housing affordability in Canada (which apparently improved in the most recent quarter) and always an eye on Ukraine-Russia where fighting continues in various spots. Markets are tense and down but we are approaching the long weekend. Traders don’t like to be too open with three days of no trading ahead of them.
