U.S. dollar on the up, but why?

The U.S. dollar is outperforming expectations, which could change the outlook for the Fed's timing on raising interest rates, says Andrew McCreath. Also the Conference Board says Ontario won't succeed in balancing the budget by 2017. The expect revenue to lag, and while McCreath says this is true, he adds that new expenses will create even bigger budget issues ahead.

Tax inversion rule changes are coming according to Jack Lew, Treasury Secretary. Affecting deals that closed yesterday or after, the rules include blocking “hopscotching” loans that provide access to offshore cash without going through the U.S. company, prohibit methods of boosting the size of the foreign entity which are required to ensure that the U.S. company owns less than 80% of the assets of the combined firm and make it harder for U.S. firms to spin off subsidiaries overseas

Waiting for what's behind the morning

Today we have the facts of the Fed (statement and economic projection release at 2 p.m. ET and press conference at 2:30 p.m. ET). Remember, often times, the first reaction is the wrong one. We also get oil inventories (a 1.5 million barrel drop is expected. Inventories have fallen in 10 of the last 11 weeks).

Who makes more jobs, small or big business?

With markets mixed across the board, Andrew McCreath says the focus is on the anticipated action from the FED next week. Labour markets and inflation in the U.S. are trending towards normal, but not monetary policy. Because the U.S. has failed to redistribute wealth, McCreath says, the FED is unlikely to be as hawking as markets seem to believe. As well, with Ottawa announcing EI cuts yesterday, McCreath questions whether these measures are enough to make any real change for Canadian business.
