Securities and Exchange Commission

Mandated to protect investors, maintain fair, orderly, and efficient markets, and facilitate capital formation.

 

Commodities Futures Trading Commission

Regulator for commodity futures and open markets.

 

Office of the Comptroller of the Currency

The OCC charters, regulates, and supervises all national banks and the federal branches and agencies of foreign banks.

 

Office of Thrift Supervision

Mandated to supervise savings associations and their holding companies in order to maintain their safety and soundness and compliance with consumer laws, and to encourage a competitive industry.

 

Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation

Its role is to preserve and promote public confidence in the U.S. financial system by insuring deposits in banks and thrift institutions, as well as limiting the effect on the economy and the financial system when a bank or thrift institution fails.

Canadian Depository for Securities Ltd.

Manages the trade clearing and settlement of depository-eligible securities, both domestically, and cross-border.

 

Chambre de la sécurité financière

Organization that oversees the training, discipline, ethics and education for Quebec's 32,000 financial sector professionals.

 

CENTRAL BANKS

 

Bank of Canada

Canada's central bank. It is responsible for Canada's monetary policy, bank notes, financial system, and funds management. Principal role, as defined in the Bank of Canada Act, is "to promote the economic and financial welfare of Canada." Also offers calendar of interest rate decisions.

 

Federal Reserve

Central bank of the United States. Has information ranging from minutes from the Federal Open Market Committee meetings to monetary policy reports.

 

European Central Bank

The central bank for Europe's single currency, the euro. The ECB's main task is to maintain the euro's purchasing power and ensure price stability for the 16-member nations in the euro area.

 

Bank of England

The centre of the U.K.'s financial system, the bank is tasked to promote and maintain monetary and financial stability.

Office of the Superintendent of Financial Institutions Canada

Primary regulator and supervisor of federally regulated deposit-taking institutions, insurance companies, and federally regulated private pension plans.

 

Canadian Deposit Insurance Corporation

A federal Crown corporation whose mandate is to protect deposits made with member financial institutions in case of their collapse.

 

Canadian Securities Administrators

A voluntary umbrella organization of Canada’s provincial and territorial securities regulators whose objective is to improve, co-ordinate and harmonize regulation of the Canadian capital markets. Includes info on how to avoid fraud and start investing.
