Greater currency flexibility is important to ensure the functioning of global trade, Canada's prime minister said on Friday on a visit to Switzerland.

"It's the view of the government of Canada that a well-functioning open global trading system requires greater flexibility in currency valuations," Prime Minister Stephen Harper said when asked how G-20 countries could remedy differences over trade and currency imbalances.

Harper added that the issue of currency would continue to be a difficult one.
