Gary Scott, one of the key executives in the creation of the new Bombardier Inc. (BBD.B-T) C Series airplane is retiring from the company, the Canadian aerospace and transportation giant said Wednesday.

Scott, president of Bombardier Commercial Aircraft joined the company in 2004, after a long career at Boeing Co., and then aircraft simulator maker CAE Inc.

The C Series is Bombardier's $3.4-billion bid to vault into the highest ranks of the commercial aviation business by competing with Boeing and Airbus SAS.

"The C Series program is tracking well and with the program at this advanced stage I feel very comfortable leaving it in the capable hands of My colleagues," he said in a statement.

Guy Hachey, president of Bombardier Aerospace, will head the commercial aircraft operations until Scott's replacement is named.
