Top Picks from David Baskin: Goldman Sachs, Crombie REIT and Express Scripts

Focus: North American Large Caps

MARKET OUTLOOK:

The most important features of the U.S. economy continue to be impressive job growth and an almost total lack of inflation. We believe that interest rates will stay much lower than many analysts believe, for much longer. There is no pressure at all for the Bank of Canada to raise rates; in fact, the weakening Canadian economy will likely result in a drop in short rates. In these circumstances interest sensitive sectors still present some good bargains, and fears about looming debt defaults are overblown, as debt service ratios remain at reasonable levels. Canadians should exercise caution with U.S. stocks as the Canadian dollar will likely bounce back over $.80 during the next few months.

Top Picks:

Goldman Sachs (GS.N)

Having passed the "stress tests" imposed by the U.S. government, Goldman can now raise its dividend and buy back shares aggressively. The most important investment bank in the world will benefit from the strengthening U.S. economy and increased underwriting activity. A buy for growth and eventually, increasing income.

Crombie REIT (CRR_u.TO)

Crombie is controlled by the Empire Group, continues to be a slow and steady builder of value. The western Canadian expansion of the Sobeys chain gains Crombie more room to grow in new areas. A buy for income seekers.

Express Scripts (ESRX.O)

Express Scripts is essentially a pharmaceutical buying group, standing as an intermediary between major group drug buyers such as hospitals, health plans and insurers, and the pharmaceutical companies. With no research risk and no litigation risk from faulty products, Express Scripts is a great way to play the high and rising demand for prescription pharmaceuticals in an ever more insured U.S. market
