The push to break down barriers imposed by traditional gender roles has been going on for years, and it’s making its presence known in more and more areas of everyday life.
Laurie Schacht, the publisher of ToyInsider.com, tells BNN that the toy aisle is no exception, with new products, such as cooking sets and action figures – once marketed to a specific sex – being created with both boys and girls in mind.
Showing off a cooking set inspired by reality TV show Masterchef – complete with apron, pots, and pans – and referencing what she calls an “onslaught” of famous male chefs, Schacht asks, “Why aren’t boys supposed to be in the kitchen?”
She adds that while the parent that typically buys these toys is more progressive, the demand for the products is self-evident.
“You’re seeing the toy manufacturers really answering a need, and we know that [the toys are] something that consumers want, because they’re doing well in the toy aisle.”
