ENTER ANDREW SCHEER

It’s the dawn of a new era in Ottawa as Andrew Scheer steps onto Parliament Hill for the first time as Conservative Party leader after he defeated frontrunner Maxime Bernier on Saturday. Today we'll gather reaction from key stakeholders on Scheer's desire to scrap the carbon tax, open up the airline industry, and assess the viability of his plan to balance the budget in two years if he beats Justin Trudeau in the next election.  We’ll also consider whether Bernier’s stance against supply management doomed his leadership bid.

G7 ON TRADE AND CLIMATE

The G7 closed out its first meeting with U.S. President Donald Trump with a communique that vows to "fight protectionism." On the surface, looks like a win after all of Trump's tough talk on trade. But that pledge comes with some asterisks. Like the group saying it will stand "firm against all unfair trade practices." The communique also left one important question unanswered: Will Trump pull the U.S. out of the Paris climate accord? "I will make my final decision on the Paris accord next week!," he tweeted shortly after the G7 wrapped.

Two main questions:

-How does the trade language in the communique help frame NAFTA negotiations and the risk of a border adjustment tax?

-How much does it hurt Canada's competitiveness if the U.S. pulls out of the Paris agreement?

Worth noting also North Korea launched another missile test today, defying the G7's call on Saturday to "abandon...ballistic missile programs in a complete, verifiable and irreversible manner."

HUSKY GIVES GO-AHEAD TO WHITE ROSE PROJECT

Husky Energy announced this morning it's giving the green light to the West White Rose offshore project in Newfoundland and Labrador. Production is expected to start in 2022, with a peak rate of 75,000 barrels per day in 2025. “Over the years the Atlantic business has provided some of the strongest returns in the Company’s portfolio and West White Rose is the next chapter,” CEO Rob Peabody said a statement.

CN RAIL STRIKE WATCH

CN Rail said on Saturday the union representing its train conductors has served 72-hour strike notice, meaning they could walk off the job on Tuesday. "We remain optimistic that we can reach an agreement without a labour disruption," said COO Mike Cory in a statement. For its part, the union is accusing the company of trying to “provoke” a strike. Should consider the risk for shippers, and whether or not the government will step in if conductors walk off the job.
