Commuters will soon be able to fly between the Niagara region and Toronto, after Greater Toronto Airways announced Monday that it will launch daily scheduled flights between the two areas.

Greater Toronto Airways said it plans to operate daily flights between Billy Bishop Airport in downtown Toronto, and the Niagara District Airport in St. Catharines, Ontario. The company said it first plans to target business travelers, and then focus on the tourism sector.

“First we’re focusing on the local economy, trying to boost the connection between Toronto and Niagara Falls. We want to bring business people back and forth between Niagara Falls and Toronto,” said Chris Nowrouzi, president and chief executive of Greater Toronto Airways, in an interview with BNN. “Then after that we’ll be focusing on the tourism sector and taking day trips and winery tours, which we already do right now.”

Nowrouzi said that daily flights for the 2016 season will cost $85 one way, while a round-trip ticket will cost $159.

The launch of the service comes as Niagara’s housing market heats up, as homebuyers look for options while Toronto’s home prices escalate out of reach for many.

“It is definitely the right time to start the service,” Nowrouzi said. “That was one of the big topics that was discussed. A lot of the people are starting to retire in Niagara or have cottages in Niagara.”

Greater Toronto Airways’ planes flying between the Niagara region and Toronto can seat up to eight people.
