With a weak loonie, it’s no wonder many Canadians are looking to make travel plans close to home. But a report from travel site Cheapflights.ca reveals that it may be even more affordable to fly to a U.S. city rather than a domestic one.

Cheapflights’ new annual Compass Report focuses on flight searches from six Canadian cities including Vancouver, Calgary, Winnipeg, Toronto, Ottawa and Montreal from May 1, 2015, to April 30, 2016.

Based on average roundtrip airfare, the top 10 most affordable destinations in that time frame were all U.S. cities, with New York topping the list at $294.

However, the most affordable places did not necessarily align with destinations Canadians actually wanted to travel to. The most-searched destination was Manila, Philippines, for example. And only 10 per cent of searches over the year were for Canadian destinations. The percentage of searches for U.S. and European destinations were on par.

For those wanting to stay on Canadian soil, the cheapest option was Montreal, with an average airfare of $481.

When it came to flying to the Caribbean, Cancun, Mexico ($473), San Juan, Puerto Rico ($487) and Montego Bay, Jamaica ($587) were the three best options for travellers’ wallets.

The cheapest gateway into Asia was Hong Kong ($961), and the most affordable European destination was Dublin ($801).
