Canadians who complain that they pay too much for air travel may be pleasantly surprised,  as average fares dropped 5.5 per cent in the fourth quarter last year – marking the third straight year-over-year quarterly decline.

Statistics Canada data released earlier this week showed that the combined average for domestic and international air fares fell to $226.70.

Average domestic air fares were $176.50, down 7.8 per cent from the same quarter a year earlier. The average international fare fell 4.2 per cent to $291.70.

But not all Canadian cities are equal, of course.

Toronto is back on top as the most expensive city for domestic air fare, edging out Vancouver which previously had the lead. The average domestic air ticket set Torontonians back $200.90 in the fourth quarter of 2015 – down 7.5 per cent from a year prior, but still ahead of Vancouver’s average fare of $195.

The cheapest places to fly in Canada, if you’re taking off to a domestic destination?  That would be Saskatoon, followed by Ottawa.

With an average air fare that has fallen 12.1 per cent to $151.50, the Prairie city has held the record for lowest average domestic air fare for the fifth consecutive quarter. In Ottawa, the average fare fell 7.4 per cent to $161.60.

The Statistics Canada data is collected directly from survey respondents, which includes air carriers Air Canada, Air Canada Rouge, Jazz, Air Canada’s Canadian code-share partners, Air Transat and WestJet. The agency says data is drawn from a random sample of 56 days per calendar year.

Air travelers may see further drops in fares this year. The International Air Transport Association said in March that prices may dip globally, as lower fuel prices are passed along to consumers.
