Telus issued an apology on Wednesday afternoon, after the telecommunications company faced public backlash and threats of subscriber cancellations after it sent a tweet that appeared to support Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s carbon price plan.

“Our carbon pricing tweet late yesterday was not meant to be partisan or political, but we know it appeared that way, and we’re sorry,” the Vancouver-based company stated this afternoon.

On Tuesday, Telus posted a tweet that supported carbon pricing via Smart Prosperity, an initiative comprised of community and business leaders, including Telus chief executive Darren Entwistle.

Telus’ tweet about carbon pricing has sparked a flurry of reaction on social media, with some customers threatening to cancel their contracts in favour of signing up with the company’s competitors.

Rival telecom companies including Rogers, Shaw and Bell were quick to answer to those requests.
