Cineplex has tapped non-movie segments to help boost revenue in recent quarters, but the nation’s largest cinema operator isn’t hosting any election-viewing parties to cap off this year’s race to the White House.

In an interview on BNN, Cineplex chief executive Ellis Jacob said he didn’t think there would be sufficient interest in watching coverage on the big screen to warrant dedicating space to the final moments of the U.S. presidential race.

“This is really a U.S. event, and very similar to a lot of movies, they perform better in the U.S. than in Canada,” he said. “There is great interest in the election, but I don’t know if people would want to sit in a movie theatre and watch it.”

Jacob said while the business case for screening election coverage in his theatres didn’t make sense, the election may have an impact on his bottom line for the evening.

“I think the only impact we’re going to have is a lower box office, because everybody’s going to be watching their televisions and looking at the results,” he said.
