Potash Corp. (POT.TO) of Saskatchewan says it is indefinitely suspending its Picadilly mine operation in New Brunswick.
The move, effective immediately, is expected to result in 420 to 430 jobs being lost.
The company says a core crew of about 35 employees will be kept on at the facility near Sussex to keep the operation in a care-and-maintenance mode.
In a news release, Jochen Tilk, company president and CEO, says the move is necessary to run a sustainable business and to meet the needs of stakeholders over the long term.
The company says to help minimize the impact of the layoffs more than 100 positions will be available for New Brunswick employees at its Saskatchewan operations.
There will also be severance and assistance packages for workers who choose not to relocate and a $5-million community investment fund will also be established to help employees and local businesses.
